Introducing EMBARK,
a new play cohort!

The submission window is open!

After finding success together through our co-production of JU1CE, an annual one-act play festival, the Wayward Artist and the Orange County Playwrights Alliance are teaming up for EMBARK.

The goal of EMBARK is to develop fresh, ambitious, and exciting plays by writers based in Orange County from the initial pitch to the completed first draft.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

EMBARK playwrights and facilitator(s) will gather for six meetings one Sunday per month from May 19th to October 20th to read and discuss new pages from the proposed plays. Meetings will take place in the Wayward Artist rehearsal space at Grand Central Arts Center. Playwrights must commit to attending all meetings.

At the end of EMBARK, writers will receive a stipend upon completing the first draft of their play. There will be a presentation of each of the plays in mid-November to invite the community to celebrate and further support the playwrights' journeys in developing their new work.

HOW TO APPLY?

We are seeking four writers to join our inaugural cohort. During the application period, interested writers should submit in a single document:

  • A one-page pitch for the proposed play. Please do not submit a pitch for a work already in progress. The proposed play can be of any genre or subject matter so long as it's intended to be a minimum of 45 pages.

  • A short bio (300 words max)

  • A ten to fifteen-page writing sample that best displays the writer’s talents. This is not restricted to a sample from a stage play.

BIPOC writers are especially encouraged to apply. All submissions will be read by a team comprised of both OCPA and Wayward Artist personnel to ensure they hold up to the missions of both organizations.
